Thirty more members of the powerful ‘Ndrangheta mafia syndicate were arrested on charges of drug trafficking. Most of the arrest were made in the Calabrian city of Rosarno a long time ‘Ndrangheta strong hold with other arrest happening in the towns of Bergamo and Milan. Along with the arrest the police seized property worth over 10 million euro’s ($98.5 Million) which included a radio station called “Radio Olimpia” police say the mafia family owned and used to transmit coded messages to member in prison.

Police called this latest operation against the Calabrain mafia “all inside” and served 30 of the 40 warrants associated with it. Most of the arrested ‘Ndrangheta members were thought to be part of the Pesce Clan who’s strong hold is the southern Calarian region. The Pesce clan operations included drug trafficking , money laundering , extortion, and murder. Seven women were among the arrested and police say they specialized in money laundering operations for the ‘Ndrangheta using dirty money to purchase real estate through shell companies.

Francesco Pesce the son of the Pesce clan boss Antonino Pesce who is already detained from a previous arrest is still at large as he was able to escape the raids. He is thought to possibly be in control of the mafia clan on the streets while his father remains in prison. The ‘Ndrangheta or Calabrian mafia has been hit hard of late by Italian police pressure with multiple clans and bosses being imprisoned.

Top Ndrangheta Mafia boss arrested in Italy

Posted By Mafia News On April 27, 2010

After being on the run for over 17 years Italian police have finally arrested one of the ‘Ndrangheta top mafia bosses. Giovanni Tegano is one of the countries 30 most dangerous fugitives and a powerful mob boss for the Calabria Mafia. Tegano has long been wanted for various mafia related charges including murder and mafia association.

Tegano is the boss of the ‘Ndrina clan of the ‘Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia. The ‘Ndrina clan is one of the most powerful clans within the mafia family. Robert Maroni the Interior Minister said the arrest was the hardest blow that could of been dealt to the ‘Ndrangheta today as Tegano was the number one wanted mafia figure from Calabria.

The ‘Ndrangheta is considered to be the most powerful of the four major organized crime syndicates operating today in Italy. They run various operations including major drug trafficking , extortion , prostitution , and arms trafficking. It is estimated that the ‘Ndrangheta mafia family in 2007 made approx 44 billion euro’s or $80 billion dollars from its various operations which was estimated to be the equivalent of 2.9% of the gross domestic product of Italy.

Of late there has been a crack down on the ‘Ndrangheta by the Italian police as some of there top bosses who had been on the run for years have finally been arrested. But it is yet to be seen if these arrest will make any significant impact on the day to day operations and power base of the now powerful Calabrian mafia.

Mafia Turf War in Montreal ?

Posted By Mafia News On March 20, 2010

Montreal may be in the grips of an all out Mafia war. Thursday afternoon there was a gangland style shooting that left two dead. Joseph Ducarme was able to flee the building and survived the attack which took place at his Old Montreal shop. Ducarme is still missing and it is yet unknown as to if he was injured also missing were the two gunmen.

Joseph Ducarme is a known player in the Montreal drug trade and is said to have links to the “Red’s” a Montreal street gang attempting to move into the drug territory. Ducarme was once a ally of Vito Rizzuto head of the Montreal based Rizzuto crime family. With Vito Rizzuto now serving a 10 year prison sentence for the killing of three Bonanno family capo’s from New York and many other powerful members of the Rizzuto family being indicted in Operation Coliseum there is a power vacuum on the streets of Montreal.

Ducarme’s ties to the street gangs and recent events point to him having a falling out with the Rizzuto clan. The Canadian police believe the Montreal Mafia was behind the attack. Some point to this as a possible response to the killing of Nick Rizzuto Jr the son of Montreal Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto which happened last December. The lucrative drug trade in Montreal seems to be the leading factor in the latest events with multiple players grabbing for a piece of the action.

The Canadian police have said they are exploring many theories as to what is happening in the Montreal underworld. A Mafia turf war is one of those possibilities which possibly involves the Rizzuto Family of Montreal and there counterparts in the Toronto Mafia. They are also considering that it may be a move by the Calabrian Mafia families against the Sicilian clan of the Rizzuto’s. Also a war between Montreal street gangs and the Montreal Mafia is even considered a possible explanation.Either way it seems like Montreal may be the battle ground for yet another bloody Mafia feud.

Italian police use Facebook to nab Ndrangheta Mobster

Posted By Mafia News On March 18, 2010

The Mafia has been linked to the social networking site known as Facebook over the last year or so and some even think the mob has used it as a recruitment tool of sorts. Well for one of the Italy’s most wanted Mafia fugitives using his Facebook account was not a good idea. The Italian police using some high tech electronic surveillance equipment were able to track down the mobster to an apartment as he logged on to his Facebook account under his internet name Georgie.

Pasquale Manfredi has been wanted by Italian police and a fugitive for some time now. Manfredi is a reputed high ranking member of the Calabrian mafia known as the ‘Ndrangheta. Italian police say that Manfredi is a feared mafia hit man and is responsible for the mafia hits on rival gangster Carmine Arena who was killed with a bazooka in 2004. Manfredi is also linked to the murder of rival mobster Pasquale Tripaldi in 2005.

Manfredi is wanted on charges of Mafia association , murder, and drug trafficking and even for possessing heavy illegal armaments was one of Italy’s 100 most wanted suspects. It is believed that Manfredi led the ‘Ndrangheta clan in the southern town of Calabria. Manfredi often used the name “Scarface” to refer to himself online and he even had a picture of the scarface movie character on his Facebook page. Italian police think Manfredi may have been using Facebook to receive coded messages from other Mafia members and his log of 200 friends is being investigated closely for any Mob ties.

‘Ndrangheta Mafia deeply rooted in Australia

Posted By Mafia News On March 15, 2010

The Calabrian Mafia which started out in South Italy as a more local power behind the larger Italian Mafia groups such as Cosa Nostra is now on the rise reports say and has expanded its power base to what some consider an unlikely place. The National Anti-Mafia Directorate in a report claims the Calabrian Mafia also known as the ‘Ndrangheta has moved into Australia and has established a deeply rooted power base there. The ‘Ndrangheta has quickly become a powerful international criminal organization.

The Directorate report mentions that several powerful ‘Ndrangheta Mafia clans such as the Barbaro Clan , Sergi Clan, and Papalia Clan are operating in Australia through active affiliates. The major business being done through these Calabrian mafia clans is that of drug trafficking. The Anti-Mafia reports says that these mafia clan’s have long had affiliates within Australia and have been controlling mob business there through these deeply linked family members for quite some time now.

Just recently the Australian police busted a multimillion dollar drug ring that was operating out of Sydney and Mildura which was tied to members of the ‘Ndrangheta. Back in 2008 Pasquale Barbaro was arrested in Australia along with 19 others as part of what was then the biggest ever ecstasy bust. Pasquale Barbaro is the son of Francesco Barbaro also known as “Little Trees” who is a high ranking member of the Griffith based Calabrian mafia clan. Along with more recent investigations the Anti-Mafia prosecutors have confirmed mafia links in Australia to two Calabrian cities Catanzaro and Reggio which are both strong hold of the ‘Ndrangheta.

With this large world wide expansion of the Calabrian mafia they are becoming one of the world wide leaders in the drug business and are already considered to be the leading trafficker’s of cocaine in Europe. It is estimated that the ‘Ndrangheta has become an operation bringing in more then $70 Billion dollars yearly. With this kind of cash flow and drive to expand the Calabrian mafia’s grasp for power knows no end and it could soon be taking over in area’s no only in Italy but around the world where other Mafia groups have held the power in years past.

‘Ndrangheta Mafia bomb court house

Posted By Mafia News On January 4, 2010

A powerful bomb was used to blow up a court room building in Reggio Calabria. The bomb was exploded at the entry way of the building which hold the court prosecutors. Police say the bomb was made out of a gas cylinder with explosives somehow attached to it. Police report that no on was injured in the explosion.

The ‘Ndrangheta or the Calabrian Mafia has been linked to the bombing. Police say they have secutirty camera footage that show’s two men on vespa scooters pulling up and placing the bomb. The men could not be identified from the footage but police will continue to look it over.

Organized crime experts in the region say that this is a attempt by the ‘Ndrangheta to scare judges and prosector’s of the court. This is a typical show of force from the calabrian mafia who often use this kind of intimidation. Agazio Loiero was quoted as saying the people of calabria stand behind the judges and prosecutors of Reggio and they will not be intimidated from doing there jobs.

Rizzuto Mafia Family response expected

Posted By Mafia News On December 30, 2009

With the murder of Vito Rizzuto’s son Nick Rizzuto Jr canadian organized crime experts expect a response from the Rizzuto mafia clan. The kind of response will speak volumes as to the strength and organization of the Rizzuto Family today. The retaliation may also go a long way into giving police an idea of who killed Rizzuto Jr. Canadian organized crime experts await to see if the Rizzuto Family response takes place in Southern Ontario, Southern Quebec, or maybe even right in Montreal.

The once powerful influence that Vito Rizzuto once held over Ontario and Montreal may now be in decline since his conviction and the Rizzuto Family may now be fighting for its survival. Police are not sure if the killing of Rizzuto was a possible inside power move ,  Calabrian Mafia Families in Ontario looking to seize power , or a drug hit performed by Canadian Street Gangs who had recently had disagreements with Rizzuto over drugs.

The Rizzuo Family has been hit hard by convictions since 2001 when the family’s Ontario crew and main power base was hit in operation “Project Colisee”. Wire taps and other information led to convictions of top lieutenants and Vito Rizzuto who was the families first Godfather in 2006. The way the Rizzuto family responds to this type of action of the murder of the Families Boss’s son will without a doubt provide a measure of strength of the Rizzuo Family today.

Mafia groups target Rome

Posted By Mafia News On December 25, 2009

The co-operation between the organised crime syndicates is a new and worrying development for the country’s capital, researchers said.

The impoverished south of Italy has been the traditional power base for the country’s four mafia groups – Sicily’s Cosa Nostra, the Camorra from Campania, the ‘Ndragheta of Calabria and the lesser known Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia.

But Mafiosi are now targeting Rome and the surrounding region of Lazio, according to a study by Libera Informazione, an independent body which monitors mafia activities.

“This ‘New Mafia’ is more business-orientated and its members put aside their differences and their different origins to accumulate wealth by working together without stepping on each other’s feet,” the report said.

In moving north, mafia gangsters have developed a new, less overt modus operandi.

Rather than collecting protection money from restaurants, shops and businesses, as they do in southern cities like Naples and Palermo, they are laundering the proceeds of crime by buying into legitimate enterprises.

There was shock and surprise in Rome earlier this year when police raided the Café de Paris, immortalised by Fellini’s 1960 film La Dolce Vita, on suspicions it was being operated by the ‘Ndragheta.

It also emerged that the mafia was alleged to have acquired a stake in another well-known restaurant near Rome’s famed Spanish Steps.

Researcher Gaetano Liardo said: “Mafiosi in Rome reinvest and launder the proceeds of crime in restaurants and other businesses.”

The city’s international airport at Fiumicino, and the sea port of Civitavecchia just to the north, have become key points for drug trafficking.

Criminal activity in Rome was now on a par with southern Italy, Libera Informazione claimed.

Low-level mafia presence in Rome dates back to the 1970s, the report said, when southern godfathers began to take control of loan-sharking in run-down estates on the city’s fringes.

But Mafiosi had become much more powerful and sophisticated in recent years, expanding into prostitution, drug trafficking, the counterfeiting of consumer goods and illegal building.

In a disturbing trend, godfathers have struck up alliances with Chinese, Russian, Albanian and Romanian organised criminals operating in Rome, with the capital now “the promised land for foreign mafias”.

In July last year, police arrested seven alleged mafia members suspected of attempting to buy into the Lazio soccer team.

An investigation by Rome’s anti-mafia police and fraud officers found evidence that the “Casalesi” clan, a powerful part of the Naples Camorra mafia, had twice tried to money-launder illegal profits by buying into the club in 2005 and 2006.

The clan had originally offered two million euros in cash to sponsor Lazio – one of the most famous clubs in the world – in the Italian Cup and the UEFA Cup.

After the offer was turned down, the Casalesi allegedly tried purchasing shares in the club through front companies based in Switzerland or Hungary. Police said the attempt to acquire a soccer club was “a new phenomenon”.

The mafia has no shortage of cash to invest. An Italian think tank, Eurispes, estimated earlier this year that criminal syndicates earned 130 billion euros, or nine per cent of Italy’s GDP, in 2008.

Drugs made up nearly half the revenue, followed by the illegal dumping of environmental waste.

TV news this week said that a mafia guy was living now for 30 years in the small city of Thunder Bay in Ontario, in Canada, and that there were 9 cells of this kind of mafia in the province of Ontario (7 mafia cells in the big city of Toronto), but that Canada had no treaty (is it) to return that mob boss to italy who wants him for trial, how can that be...
